It’s International Lefthanders Day, and we wanted to use it as an entry point into something lighter: the long-standing association between left-handedness and right-brain, intuitive thinking.

The popular version of this idea, that left-handed people are more creative or intuitive because the right hemisphere of the brain controls the left side of the body, is more folk wisdom than hard science. But it’s persisted for a reason: there’s something appealing about the idea that a physical trait might correlate with how someone processes the world.

Whether or not you’re left-handed, it’s worth asking which mode you default to more often: the analytical, sequential thinking associated with the left brain, or the pattern-based, intuitive thinking associated with the right. Most people lean one way without realizing it, and noticing your default can actually help you access the other mode more intentionally when you need it.

A lighter observance today, but a genuinely useful question underneath it.
